Damascus - Arab Today

Syria says it will stop renewing passports at its consulates in Jordan and Turkey beginning Monday.

The decision was announced through the Syrian consulates’ websites in Jordan and Turkey on Sunday night without giving further details.

According to the latest numbers, Jordan currently hosts at least 1.3 million Syrian refugees while Turkey hosts more than 2.6 million.

Syrian passports, one of the weakest in the world, has now become the most expensive after Syria’s parliament amended the consular fees to grant, renew passports and travel documents last year.

The first article of the draft law states that the consular fee to grant or renew passport and travel documents for Syrians will cost $800, according to Syrian Arab News Agency SANA.

The consulate charged $400 in the past for passport and travel services.
