Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari on Thursday met U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, currently on a visit to Iraq. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations as well as a set of issues of mutual interest.
Guterres stressed that his visit comes in solidarity with the Iraqi people, noting that liberating Mosul and defeating ISIS group will enhance Iraq's unity and develop its institutions in the near future.He added that the U.N. delegation to Baghdad is working hard to support Iraq and assists the government and offers services for displaced families. He said the U.N. will continue to assist the country after eliminating ISIS and as well as offer aid in different fields.
Iraqi parliament speaker Salim al-Jabouri also met the secretary general and called during the meeting for increasing U.N. humanitarian support for Iraq. Guterres had arrived earlier today in Baghdad on an official visit to meet a number of Iraqi officials.
