North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, 69, has died of a heart attack, state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced today.
Kim, who took over North Korea after his father and national founder Kim Il-sung died in 1994, "passed away from a great mental and physical strain" during a train ride at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the KCNA said in an urgent dispatch.
The medical cause was an "advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated by serious heart shock," South Korean News Agency (Yonhap) said, quoting KCNA.
The funeral ceremony is scheduled to be held in Pyongyang on December 28.
