Deputy Speaker of the Arab Parliament Adel Abdulrahman Mohammed Ahmed Al Assoumi praised Monday the State of Qatar for hosting the International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region.
Speaking at the opening session, Al Assoumi said that the conference couldn’t come at a better time as the entire Arab World needed a firm stand if it wanted to end human rights violations in the region. He admitted that Arab countries were facing numerous threats and dangers to human rights, particularly in conflict-stricken areas.
He touched on the signing of the MoU the Arab Parliament and Qatar's National Human Rights Committee and said that it will enhance the partnership between the two sides to promote human rights.
Al Assomi stressed that the Arab Parliament works on enhancing joint Arab work and maintaining the national security of member states. He added that issues pertaining to human rights in the region have been placed on the schedule of the parliament’s specialized committee on the matter. He highlighted that they launched an initiative to support Syrian refugees, one of the parliament’s many efforts to promote human rights.
The Deputy Speaker was vocal in expressing the parliament’s support to the right of the Palestinian people to live peacefully on its independent state. He also praised the UN resolutions related to the illegality of Israeli settlements built on Palestinian land and the judaization of Al Quds.
He said that the Arab Parliament has prepared a document sent it to the General Secretariat of the Arab League in order to be presented to the upcoming Arab Summit. He explained that the document emphasizes the importance of preserving Arab national security and fighting terrorism and armed organizations and militias, and calls to suspend Israel's membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union because of its racism and abhorrent practices and for not respecting the international legitimacy resolutions.
The document also condemns interventions in the internal affairs of Arab countries and emphasizes the importance of improving the human rights environment in the Arab world.
