The unemployment rate nationwide decreased to 9.4% in 2016 against 9.7% a year earlier, which is a drop of 0.3 point, according to the High Planning Commission (HCP).

With a fall of 47,000 people (45,000 in the urban area and 2,000 in the rural one), active jobless population decreased, between 2015 and 2016, from 1,148,000 to 1,105,000 jobless individuals, said HCP in an information note on the situation of the labor market in 2016.

Between the two periods, unemployment rate fell from 14.6% to 13.9% in urban areas and increased from 4.1% to 4.2% in rural areas, said HCP, underlining that the most significant decline in unemployment rates was registered among people aged between 35 and 44 years (-0.7 point) and people holding a degree (-0.4 point).

However, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15-24 years increased by 1.7 point, the source added.
