A total of 39 people have been killed in fires during the week-long Spring Festival holiday, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Saturday.

During the vacation, 13,796 fires broke out around the country, a year-on-year drop of 11.8 percent, killing 39, a decrease of 26.4 percent, said the ministry.

The MPS said police nationwide strengthened inspections of fire hazards across landmarks, shopping malls, religious sites, firework display areas and temple fair sites.
