Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed eight wickets to help bowl out India for 189 on the opening day of the second Test in Bangalore on Saturday.
Opener Lokesh Rahul top-scored with 90 before falling to Lyon, who recorded career-best figures of 8-50 as the hosts were dismissed in the final session after electing to bat first.
Steve Smith's Australia lead the four-match series 1-0.
