Marseille's mediocre season took a new hit Wednesday when the ailing Ligue 1 side were knocked out of the French League Cup, while their arch rivals Paris Saint Germain progressed to the semi-finals.
Toulouse put paid to Marseille's hopes with a 2-1 extra time quarter-final away win at the Velodrome, their goals coming from Ben Yedder and Danish international Martin Braithwaite.
"It's a disappointment that's for sure," said Marseille manager Michel.
"We've got 11 players injured at the moment but I don't want to use that as an excuse."
Toulouse were joined in the semi-finals by Lille, who saw off Guingamp 4-2 on penalties after extra time ended goalless, with Lille keeper Vincent Enyeama stopping two spot-kicks.
Holders Paris Saint Germain also progressed with goals in either half from Adrien Rabiot and Lucas, who was brilliantly set up by Angel Di Maria, who came off the bench to provide the runaway Ligue 1 leaders with the goal that clinched a 2-1 home win over Lyon and keep them on target for a third successive title.
"Di Maria made the difference, "He showed what he's capable of," said PSG coach Laurent Blanc.
Completing the last four line-up are Bordeaux, 2-0 winners over Lorient on Tuesday.
