US State Department awarded on Wednesday 13 women from around the world, including three Arabs, the 2017 Secretary of State's International Women of Courage Award..
The first lady Melania Trump and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon presented the Award to the women who were recognized for their courage and leadership while advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality and women's empowerment.
Melania Trump spoke of the award recipients, saying "These honorees, who have fought on the front lines against injustice, are true heroes." Among the winners were three Arab women, Jannat Al Ghezi, Carolin Tahhan and Fadia Najib.
Jannat Al Ghezi, deputy director of The Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq, was presented with the award for playing a prominent role in protecting Iraqi women from violence and providing safe havens for them, as well as training and legal services.
Carolin Tahhan was awarded for her contribution to protect Syrian children and women and her Damascus-run school provided a safe haven for more than 200 Muslim and Christian children and also provided assistance to displaced women through a UN-supported program.
Fadia Najib is a human rights activist from Yemen, who stated that she was facing the daily danger of death to protect children in conflict zones, fought the military enlistment of children by extremist groups, as well as reporting to the Security Council on the cases of violence and abduction against children and violations by armed groups.
