Billy Idol plans to release new memoir Dancing With Myself.
The 58-year-old musician penned the work himself, and named it after his 1980 hit song. Publisher Touchstone, of Simon & Schuster UK, touts the book as "bold, searingly candid and written...in his inimitable voice."
The memoir recounts Idol's "transient childhood," and follows through to his musical success. It also details the "culture, sex, drugs and rock & roll" that played a role in his career.
Idol was born William Broad in Middlesex, England in 1955. He joined the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans in his early 20s, and went on to form his own punk band in 1976. The group was called Generation X, and released four albums before Idol left to pursue a solo career.
The musician moved to New York in 1981, and released his first solo album in 1982. His bad boy image contributed to his success, and several of his songs became MTV staples. Idol has released five studio albums since, and plans to release a new record Kings & Queens of the Underground in October 2014.
Dancing With Myself debuts in bookstores October 7. The author and musician will make an appearance at the annual BookExpo America on May 29 before he kicks off his summer tour May 31.
