Egyptian star Khaled Nabawy has announced his support for presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, while fellow actor Khaled Saleh has called the revolutionary candidates to unite behind Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, although he earlier said he supported Sabahi. Nabawy said in an interview with Arabstoday that he would vote for someone he sees as a perennial hard-worker. "Sabahi was there, present in the Egyptian street, and knows Egypt from the roots to its branches (in all entirety)," he added. He also said he had read the electoral programmes of the candidates in addition to their biographies, eventually deciding to go for Sabahi, a self-proclaimed Nasserist. On the other hand, despite his earlier announcement that he would vote for Sabahi, Khaled Saleh called on candidates to unite behind Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh as he is “the most popular revolutionary candidate”. Saleh denied that he had stopped supporting Sabahi, saying on his Twitter page that a failure to unite behind Aboul Fotouh would lead to the success of one of the former regime’s candidates. He added that the real competition was between Aboul Fotouh, the Muslim Brotherhood nominee Mohammed Morsy, former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, and former Arab League chief Amr Moussa.
