Minister of State for Electricity and Water Affairs Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza said that lighting of roads and streets cost the kingdom around BD3 million annually, noting that the alternative is to take advantage of the solar-powered street lighting, which is free.
In a statement to "Akhbar Al-Khaleej" newspaper, published today, Dr. Mirza said that the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) had already started using solar energy for street lighting through launching a pilot project in Road 901 in Hidd, Muharraq.
He added that EWA had also upgraded the efficiency of the lighting lamps in Road 2431 through changing the existing lamps by energy-saving ones.
