Dragon F4 has announced the addition of Renault Sport Academy driver Sun Yue Yang from China to contest the final round of the 2016/2017 F4UAE Championship this weekend in Abu Dhabi.
One of China’s rising karting stars, the Shanghai-born racer will use round five of the F4UAE Championship at Yas Marina Circuit as preparation for his upcoming season of Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.
After three years of karting, Sun Yue Yang’s accolades include fourth place in the 2015 South Garda Winter Cup, fifth in the 2015 WSK Champions Cup and the first Chinese driver to finish on the podium, 13th in the 2015 CIK-FIA European Championship, 14th in the 2015 World Championship, a round win in DKM, the German Karting Championship, before joining the Renault Sport Academy last year.
"We are thrilled to have Sunny joining us at Dragon F4 for the final round of the F4UAE Championship as he prepares for his Formula Renault campaign," said Dragon F4 Team Principal, Brad Fincham.
"The Renault Sport Academy entrusting Dragon F4 with the development of one of their academy drivers highlights not only our commitment and enthusiasm to develop junior drivers, but how the F4UAE Championship offers the perfect platform for a driver to gain valuable seat time and experience."
Sun Yue Yang replaces departing Australian Oscar Piastri, who has contested the last three rounds for Dragon F4 in the #88 Dragon F4 Tatuus racecar. Piastri claimed two podium race finishes for Dragon F4 at the last event, before preparing for a full season of the British F4 Championship in the UK as of next month.
As a motorsport operation, Dragon Racing has twice been crowned the Pro-Am class champions at the Dubai 24 Hours endurance race including third outright in 2015 in their Ferrari 458 GT3, plus most recently won the 2015/2016 Saudi Arabian GT Championship in a McLaren 650S GT Sprint.
Sun Yue Yang will arrive in the UAE in the coming days ready for the fifth and final round of the inaugural F4UAE Championship powered by Abarth. The event will be held at the Home of F4UAE, Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, from 9th - 11th March, where the event will include two days of testing, qualifying and the final four races of the season.
