Natasha Lyonne discussed her future as Nicky on Orange is the New Black at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Tuesday.

The 36-year-old actress opened up about season 3, which saw her character taken away to maximum security prison in episode 3. Lyonne did not appear on the rest of the season, and told TV Guide she found Nicky's fate "very appropriate."

"I think when people are destructive it has big consequences," she reflected. "And I think what's so excellent about [the show] is that, as funny as it is, it's always grounded by the stakes of the situation these characters are in."

"I certainly don't know what's in [series creator] Jenji [Kohan's] mind," she said of her possible return. "So, who knows? And I could certainly see a million different avenues to go down... I mean, I love this show so much. I love everybody that I've gotten to work with."

Lyonne has portrayed Nicky since Orange is the New Black's premiere in 2013. The series will return for a fourth season on Netflix in 2016, and told E! News she trusts Kohan to make the right decision for her character.

"I thought it was wise to have there be a big consequence for Nicky's playing around with heroin," she said. "I think it's a good thing to have major characters suffer major consequences. Otherwise, I think it might be a little bit too friendly and it loses some of its bite."

Orange is the New Black co-stars Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon and Uzo Aduba. The series is based on Piper Kerman's memoir of the same name, and follows the fictionalized Piper after she is sentenced to 15 months in a women's federal prison.
