Surfers from across the world flock to the beaches of Mal Pais, where the expansive surf and large number of waves provide the perfect environment for any aficionado of the sport. Featuring year-round warm weather and laid-back atmosphere, Mal Pais also provides a nice spot to take in the loveliness of the Pacific Ocean for any traveler in Costa Rica. Although its name means "bad land," the town's lovely surroundings make this translation laughable. With a great mix of established locals and more recent transplants and a range of multi-ethnic restaurants, the town's cultural offerings are quite excellent, as well. The surf represents a great challenge for even the most seasoned surfers. On some days, experts cannot even reach the waves, so those who are keen on trying out the waves here may want to plan a few days' stay. For those who find themselves unable to take on the tides, fishing is a great alternative. The sport has long been a livelihood in Mal Pais, and the fertile waters remain rather fruitful in terms of a daily catch.
