Dubai - WAM

Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, DSCE, has reviewed progress on several key projects, initiatives and programmes, including the World Green Economy Organisation, WGEO, a hydroelectric power station in Hatta, and the Dubai Green Mobility initiative.

This came up at council's 43rd meeting, which was chaired by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of DSCE.

The meeting discussed important strategic projects, initiatives and programmes to establish a sustainable approach to save energy and support economic growth while preserving the environment and natural resources.

"This is aligned with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to make Dubai a global hub for clean energy and green economy, and also one of the cities with the lowest carbon footprint worldwide by 2050," Al Tayer said.

"We also discussed the approved roadmap to implement the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, aiming to provide seven percent of Dubai’s total energy output from clean resources by 2020, 25 percent by 2030 and 75 percent by 2050. To this end, we depend mainly on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology and concentrated solar power or CSP technology, which will help us benefit from the huge storage capabilities it provides. The DSCE reviewed the latest developments in batteries and power storage technologies to deploy the same when possible," he added.

"WGEO has formally signed a collaboration agreement with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, to seek partnerships with private, government, civil, banking and educational bodies as well as NGOs. The organisation will focus on the role of the private sector in advancing new technologies and funding, which can influence delivery of tangible projects," said Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Energy.

The meeting was attended by Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality; Abdulla bin Kalban, CEO and MD of Emirates Global Aluminium; Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Energy; Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of Emirates National Oil Company, ENOC; Abdullah Abdul Kareem, Director-General of the Department of Oil Affairs; Khalid Mohammed Sharif, Assistant Director-General for Health, Safety and Environment Control Division at Dubai Municipality; Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee; Nasser Abu Shehab, CEO of the Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector at Roads and Transport Authority; Frederick Chemin, General Manager of Dubai Petroleum, and Simon Cattle, General Manager of Dubai Supply Authority, DUSUP.
