Kuwait - KUNA

Kuwait is committed to keeping the environment healthy and clean, said Tuesday Minister of Information Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Sabah, opening here a two-day celebration of Earth Day at the National Museum of Kuwait. Sheikh Salman, who is also State Minister for Youth Affairs, indicated in a press statement that the government was eager to support any public function promoting the protection of the environment. With regard to the Earth Day celebration, he said it is being observed through a number of activities on the Museum's stage, including musical stage presentations and poetry recitals. Taking part in these presentations are a selected number of local, regional, and international artists who extol the importance of living in a clean and protected environment, he said. He noted that Kuwait is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which is an international treaty that sets binding obligations on industrialized countries to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection which is what Kuwait is doing for two days at the National Museum
