The Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC) officially opened its doors at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) today. Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office (GDMO) Mona Al Marri officially opened the event at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, in the presence of CEO of Dubai World Trade Centre and Director General of Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) Helal Saeed Al Marri.

Following the inauguration, Al Marri was given a tour of the main highlights of the event by Ben Caddy, CEO and Arafaat Ali Khan, Director of Communications of The Alliance, the organisers of the event.

On the occasion of the inauguration, Al Marri said: "Middle East Film and Comic Con 2017 further reinforces Dubai’s profile as a hub for major events in the cultural and entertainment sector. Dubai is growing as a regional focal point for talent, resources and investment in this sector, with the city providing an ideal platform for creative professionals from across the world to showcase their talent, and for media and entertainment organisations to tap opportunities in the region. The event also adds to the creative environment of Dubai and contributes to further fostering innovation and artistic excellence in the industry."

The Middle East Film and Comic Con is the region’s largest popular culture festival showcasing Film, TV, Sci-Fi, Animation, Gaming, Manga, Comics, Collectables and more. Fans can meet celebrities, buy exclusive merchandise, take part in creative workshops & competitions, compete in gaming tournaments or just relax with friends and family.

Some of the key highlights of the event include the Star Trek 50 Year Exhibit, which features 50 art pieces by 50 Artists from 10 Countries all inspired by, and in celebration of, 50 years of Star Trek. This includes work by Leonard Nimoy who played the role of Spock - from the first 1966 TV episode to the film, Star Trek Into Darkness.

Visitors can check out the world’s newest superhero, and enjoy performances by local bands and DJ’s, as well as MEFCC favorites like the Geek Quiz and the now legendary Splash Cosplay Comp. Attendees can get a sketch or signing from top professional comics and manga artists and buy exclusive artwork at the New International Artists Alley.

Tournaments at the event give visitors the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete with the region’s top eSports players. The event also features Dodgeball and Teen Wolf Basketball Tournaments.

Visitors also have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet an eclectic bunch of film & TV stars at the MBC Meet the Stars area. At the Novo & Imax Cine Club, visitors have a chance to ask the stars and guests questions at panel discussions and Q&A sessions.
