France to fund water sector in north Jordan

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) on Sunday signed an agreement with the French Embassy to fund the water sector in the northern region at a cost of €22.8 million to improve water services that had been strained by the influx of Syrian refugees.
Minister of Water and Irrigation Hazem Nasser said that the French aid will help improve water services and sanitation in the Yarmouk Water Company (YWC), enhance the capabilities of its staff and provide pumps for water wells in the area.
The fund also covers the implementation of the Abu Alanda pipeline to carry additional quantities of water from the Disi water conveyance project to the city of Zarqa and the northern governorates at a cost of €48 million.
French Ambassador Caroline Dumas reiterated the importance of France's support to the water sector, the exchange of expertise and the use of technology in water treatment for agricultural and industrial purposes, as well as management of wells and aquifers.
