Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Development, Dr. Hassan Abdel Gader Hilal, met Monday, with a delegation from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) headed by Amanda Korn, the regional representative of the (UNEP) in Geneva.
The meeting discussed the possibility of implementing climate change projects and their impact on security in Sudan, especially in the states of Darfur, Kordufan, Blue Nile, Kassala and the Savannah areas.
In a press statement to SUNA the Environment Minister stressed the necessity to build confidence and affirming the political will of the state to implement the provisions of the Convention on Climate Change, calling on the international community to fulfill its commitments through financing the projects of the least developed countries, which were presented in the program of work directed to climate adaptation.
The Minister indicated the importance of setting an action program to activate measures, support, development and transfer of friendly technologies to developing countries', the reduction of heat emissions, adaptation to climate, and to realize the qualitative and quantitative targets for adaptation to prevent negative effects of climate change.
He added that the importance of the issue for the Sudan comes from the dependence of the population on agriculture and irrigation, noting that the rain fluctuation, and climate change led to the deterioration of natural resources, a matter that have led to conflicts between the herders and farmers, especially in the Western regions.
The Minister of Environment noted that the UN representative Prof. Amanda Korn stressed the keenness of the UN and its efforts to provide technical and logistical support to the climate change program in Sudan.
