A decision from Australian energy contractor Clough to invest in Scotland is a testament of the country's industry leadership, the government said Monday. Scottish First Deputy Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Clough was setting up an office in Glasgow to service energy markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "This is a testament to the quality and skills of the local workforce. Scotland's energy sector boasts strong engineering and manufacturing skills that are globally recognized across the oil and gas industry," she said in a statement. Clough Managing Director Kevin Gallagher said he chose Scotland for the new office because of its track record with engineering and its proximity to his company's clients in the North Sea, Europe, Middle East and Africa. The Scottish government said it was supporting Clough's decision with nearly $2.5 million in public funds. Edinburgh expects more than 100 new jobs to come from the Glasgow facility. Scotland holds a referendum for independence in September. The government said it could support itself in part through its energy sector. British Prime Minister David Cameron said the region would be better off united.
