Tourism Ministry said on Tuesday that the government launched the first phase of a plan to use solar panels in producing electricity in hotels nationwide.
The first phase which covers ten hotels would cost up to EGP 20 million, Advisor to Tourism Minister Emad Hassan said.
Solar panels that use sunlight to produce electricity and LED lamps are part of the plan to rationalize power consumption, Hassan said.
The first phase is scheduled to be carried out by Tourism Ministry and Egypt New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) in cooperation with the Solar Energy Development Association (SEDA), he added.
The initiative, hoped to cover all tourist hotels, is funded by a sovereign wealth fund with a total capital estimated at EGP 500 million, he said
