Carefully choosing the materials used in construction, plus ensuring energy efficiency in the design were part of the plan to turn the UAE pavilion into a permanent structure when it travels to its next home at Masdar City.

"The measures put in, the glazing of the panels, the design itself, the use of energy and light is all so that the building performs in a more efficient way,” said Dr Nawal Al Hosany.

"What is also important is the education and awareness element,” she said.

"When you go through the UAE pavilion you understand the journey of the UAE and how it pushed boundaries to survive.

"Visiting the pavilion in Masdar City will also help people understand the impact on the environment, how important it is to be sustainable and realise that there is a lot they can do to make the right choices,” Dr Hosany said.

Ensuring the structure could be adapted to the different climates of Milan and Abu Dhabi was a key part of the challenge for the lead architects Foster + Partners.

"Our challenge has been to create a naturally cool, comfortable space for visitors in Milan, while considering the pavilion's ultimate reconstruction in the Emirates, where there is a need to provide shade from the intense sun,” said Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners.
