International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and international experts will discuss current and future challenges facing the nuclear verification regime at a five-day symposium on international safeguards in Vienna, Austria, next week.
More than 700 international experts will address new and existing safeguards technologies, techniques and approaches during the event, which starts Monday, 20 October 2014. The opening plenary features statements by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano; Director-General of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission Vladimir ?ucha; Ambassador of the Russian Federation Grigory V. Berdennikov; and Policy Director of the United States Office of Non-proliferation and National Security Kasia Mendelsohn. Speakers at the closing plenary on 24 October 2014 will include Rob Floyd, Director General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-proliferation Office, and Tero Varjoranta, Head of the IAEA’s Department of Safeguards.
The IAEA holds a safeguard symposium every four years. The 2014 event, which is the 12th of its kind, takes place under the title International Safeguards: Linking Strategy, Implementation and People.
