A conference on prevention of radiation in nuclear medicine got underway here on Sunday, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR).
Samir Al-Asfour, the health assistant undersecretary for engineering issues, said in the opening statement that the conference aimed at enhancing awareness among doctors and technicians on necessity of taking proper precautions against hazardous radiation, also noting the need to educate staff in the medical sector about protecting patients.
Dr. Nader Al-Awadhi, the national liaison officer of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), underscored necessity of the convention to educate physicians and medical staff about safety precautions against radiation, also noting the productive cooperation between Kuwait and the IAEA with respect of abiding by international standards at this level.
The Ministry of Health has presented three projects to the IAEA for technical cooperation during 2016-2017 period of time, Dr. Al-Awadhi said, adding that they tackle national resources for monitoring radioactive materials affecting the environment, updating laboratories specialized in measuring radiological contamination and establishing a training program for clinical nuclear medicine.
The three-day conference, the first of its kind to be held in Kuwait, groups elite internationally-renowned specialists. It is organized by the Department of Nuclear Medicine Physics of the Ministry of Health.
