100 percent of New Britain Palm Oil Limited's palm oil will be eco-certified, segregated, and fully traceable by the end of the year, reports the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The move is the first such commitment for a palm oil major. It positions the company for sales in premium markets where consumers are concerned about the environmental performance of the products they buy. Environmental activists have targeted some companies that fail to use palm oil certified under the RSPO, which aims to improve the environmental performance of the crop, which has been linked to deforestation and degradation of peatlands. New Britain Palm Oil Limited has oil palm plantations in Papua New Guinea. New Britain Palm Oil Limited's announcement comes less than a month after Unilever revealed plans to build a palm oil processing mill in Indonesia for segregated, RSPO-certified palm oil.
