South Pars gas field’s Phase 15 platform came into operation this morning, an energy official announced on Saturday.
"Six oil rigs of the South Pars Phase 15 platform are operating now," Reza Forouzesh, the development manager of South Pars' Phases 15 and 16, said today.
He noted that the South Pars gas field's Phase 15 will produce a sum of 450 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d), and added, "The Phase 15 refinery will inject 31.5 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) of sweet gas to the national grid."
In December, Forouzesh announced that the sweet gas recovered from phase 16 of the South Pars gas field was transferred to the onshore facilities.
"The phase 16 of the massive offshore reservoir supplied its first delivery of sweet gas, measuring 7.5 million cubic meters (mcm), to the trunkline," Forouzesh said.
South Pars phases 15 and 16 are expected to be producing 56.6 mcm of natural gas per day, 75,000 barrels of gas condensate on a daily basis, and more than one ton of liquefied propane and butane as well as one million tons of ethane annually.
South Pars currently supplies 300 mcm/d of natural gas to Iran gas trunklines, which equals 72 percent of the country’s total consumption.
South Pars covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.
The gas field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.
