Japanese carmaker Nissan said Saturday it was recalling 226,326 additional vehicles in the United States due to faulty airbags.
The move brings the total number of vehicles recalled for this reason to 664,628, the company said in a statement, adding that the defective airbags were made by Japan's Takata Corp.
Nissan, which notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the recall, said it was working to "promptly address" the issue.
The affected vehicles were built between 2001 and 2003, Nissan said. These include the Infiniti I35, Nissan Maxima and the FX35 and FX45 Infiniti SUVs, the 4X4 Infiniti QX42, as well as Pathfinder and Sentra models.
In the affected vehicles, the software activation of the airbags is defective, which can prevent the protective cushions from deploying.
The move is the latest to date taken by a carmaker in relation to faulty airbags since the beginning of the year.
In total, more than 10 million vehicles around the world are currently subject to recalls by leading manufacturers including Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, BMW and General Motors.
