Trinity Mirror has promoted some of its regional newspaper editors to editor-in-chief across several neighbouring titles and has created a new role of deputy editorial director for the group of 130 daily and weekly newspapers. Alan Edmunds will take up the role of deputy editorial director with immediate effect, reporting to group editorial director Neil Benson. Edmunds will continue with his current job as editor-in-chief of Media Wales, the division that includes the Western Mail, South Wales Echo and Wales on Sunday, but will give up his additional role as Media Wales managing director to "allow him to concentrate on his increased editorial responsibilities". Benson said in a statement: "Alan's promotion is richly deserved. He and I have worked together over several years and I am looking forward to an even closer working relationship as we tackle the challenges that face the industry." Editors-in-chief have been appointed in each of the regions where Trinity Mirror publishes daily newspapers. The promoted editors will add the region's other titles to their responsibilities and other editors in the region will report to them. Trinity Mirror said the new set-up would allow editors in each region to "work even more cohesively and to accelerate the development of our newspapers and websites". The editors-in-chief are Darren Thwaites (Newcastle and Teesside), David Brookes (Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry), Alastair Machray (Merseyside, North Wales and Cheshire) and Rob Irvine (Manchester and Huddersfield). Yesterday, Trinity Mirror announced a number of editor changes, with Rob Irvine replacing Maria McGeoghan at the Manchester Evening News and Alison Gow appointed editor of the North Wales Daily Post.
