Paris - KUNA

UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) condemned on Tuesday the killing of Egyptian journalist Mayada Ashraf in Cairo on March 28."I deplore the murder of Mayada Ashraf, killed while carrying out her professional duty to inform the public," UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said in a statement, calling on the Egyptian government to do everything possible to shed light on this crime and bring perpetrators to justice. "Journalists must be able to do their job without fearing for their lives. This is a key for upholding the right to freedom of expression, one of the pillars of democratic society," said Bokova.According to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), Mayada Ashraf, 22, who worked for Al-Dustour daily newspaper, was shot in the head while covering a clash between supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and forces of current government. She is the seventh Egyptian journalist who died while performing their duties since beginning of January 2013.
