Comedian and actor Aziz Ansari visited The Tonight Show on Monday night to promote the release his book Modern Romance.
While he was there things got a little "textual."
In doing research for the book, Ansari said that he gathered data from men and women about their first text experience with a potential partner. In doing so he discovered that the exchanges were far less than romantic.
They were awkward.
"It was really surprising -- like -- the kind of bozo texts that dudes send, because it seems like a very simple thing," Ansari said. "Most dudes are writing very weird things, or just saying 'Hey.'"
Show host Jimmy Fallon exploited the moment by having fans submit their own embarrassing first text experiences to be read on the show.
Fallon, known for engaging in comical antics with celebrity guests, set the mood with dimmed lights and slow jams while candles and rose petals adorned his desk. With that, the two launched into the cringeworthy and hilarious exchanges in a segment entitled "First Textual Experience."
It seemed like everything that could go wrong went wrong with these digital notes written by men: spelling errors, lengthy paragraphs and, sadly, a dooming combination of the two were reiterated.
There was one text that went "I wanted to say hi and sort of 'texty' introduce myself," that Rolling Stone magazine said Ansari read with the "perfect amount of nerve-wracked jitters".
At least Jimmy and Aziz let men who have trouble sending that first text know they're not alone.
