Ariana Grande
Los Angeles - UPI

Ariana Grande has railed against the media's obsession with her dating life, saying that she wants to be valued as an individual and not as someone's girlfriend.

In a lengthy Twitter post, Grande criticized double standards for women in the music industry.

"Being 'empowered' ... is not the same as being a 'b****,'" Grande wrote. "HAVING SOMETHING TO SAY...is not the same as HAVING A BAD ATTITUDE."

The 21-year-old singer broke up with rapper Big Sean last April but has since been linked to One Direction's Niall Horan.

Her Twitter rant comes in the wake of comments she gave to The Sun.

"A girl can be friends with something with a d**k and not hop on it," she said when the British tabloid asked about the Horan rumors.

"I'm tired of needing to be linked to a guy," she said. "I'm not Big Sean's ex, I'm not Niall's possible girl. I'm Ariana Grande. If that's not enough, then don't talk to me!"

Grande said she comes from a "long line" of female activists and closed with a quote from famed feminist Gloria Steinem: "Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke. She will need her sisterhood."

Grande's rant received numerous messages of support from fans, including fellow musician Taylor Swift.
