A total of 10 grassroots heroes or "Good Samaritans" for the third quarter of 2013 have been unveiled after a public online vote which started at the beginning of the month. Initiated and sponsored by Xinhua News Agency, netizens selected 10 grassroots heros from 20 candidates who have drawn attention to moral and societal issues. The 10 heros include Shaanxi Province's Niu Yuqin, who over the last 28 years has planted more than 7,300 hectares of trees to control decertification, and Chen Zeren, who has donated over 160 liters of blood in 10 years. The vote, held since 2010, is conducted quarterly to promote ordinary people's good deeds and improve moral awareness in society.
