Pornographic cartoons
Beijing - XINHUA

China has shut down or suspended five websites for publishing pornographic cartoons, the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications announced on Monday.

The five, including leading cartoon portal "Dong Man Zhi Jia" (Home of Cartoons), have been fined, and weisuoshu.com's founder, whose name was given as Qi, has been arrested, according to a statement.

The office did not say how much the websites were fined.

Along with the Cyberspace Administration of China, it launched a campaign in March to crack down on pornographic, violent or terrorist content and promotion of illegal religions on websites to protect minors.

The office also revealed that five staff from two printing houses in Beijing and two in the eastern city Ningbo have been detained by police for pirating children's books.
