Classes in Jeddah were suspended on Wednesday as a precautionary measure as rain prevailed over parts of the city, notably in the southern and eastern areas. Hussain Al-Qahtani, spokesman of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME), said the weather was expected to stabilize Wednesday evening as the wind changed to northerly bringing down the temperature in most places. Precautions were taken to protect people on receiving weather reports warning about thunder showers in the city. PME Undersecretary Saad Muhallafi said there was nothing to worry as heavy rain was not likely and the situation in all regions was closely watched. Dust winds had reduced the visibility considerably in the city on the last two days. Al-Muhallafi also warned people against unauthorized text messages on weather conditions. “People can learn about the latest weather situation by calling telephone no. 988 or 026532197,” he said. Maj. Gen. Adil Zamzami, Makkah Civil Defense director, said an emergency plan has been in place with special Civil Defense teams deployed in all emergency support centers to counter any eventuality.
