The results of the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) summer session which will decide the fate of more than 138,000 students will be announced on Friday, according to the Ministry of Education. Education Minister Fayez Saudi will hold a press conference at 9:00pm on Friday to announce the results, the passing rates and the names of the top students in the various streams of the exam, which ended July 10, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Earlier this month, the education ministry conducted a poll via its website for Tawjihi students and their parents, which included a question on whether to announce the exam results during the day or after sundown during the holy month of Ramadan. Fifty-one per cent of Jordanians said they want the results to be announced after iftar, while 44 per cent voted that they should be announced before sunset. The results of the Tawjihi exam are decisive for students and their families, as they are the only criteria used for university admission. Education Ministry Spokesperson Ayman Barakat said that students will be able to retrieve their marks at their schools at the same time as the press conference, according to Petra.Half-an-hour before the press conference, the ministry will start sending the results to students via SMS to their mobile phones. The results will also be available on the ministry’s website, Barakat said. A total of 138,907 students, 66,455 of them girls, registered for the summer session which started on June 17 and ended on July 10, up from 130,710 students who registered last year. Of the total, 118,253 students are registered in the academic streams — literary, scientific, Sharia, IT and health education — while the remaining students are registered in vocational streams. The number of regular students who were scheduled to sit for the exam totalled 97,744, while the number of privately tutored students was 41,163. From jordantimes
