The closing of an elementary school on the Turkish-Syrian border of Akcakale continues for yet another day because of a two-day conflict between the Islamic front and the Islamic State of Iraq (Damascus) in Syria. The ongoing conflict in neighboring Syria can reportedly be heard from Akcakake where the school is located. District Mayor Eyup Firat asserted that Cumhuriyet Elementary School had to be closed for safety reasons, and said, ‘’if the conflict persists, we may have to interrupt the schooling.’’ Five civilians died when Akcakale was hit by shelling from across the border in 2012.
