Manama - BNA

Education Minister Dr. Majid bin Ali Al-Nuaimi affirmed that thanks to the directives of the leadership and the Government's efforts represented in the Ministry of Education, the Ministry was able to reduce illiteracy to 2.46% for the category targeted by the Ministry's programmes and this has placed Bahrain at the forefront of Arab countries in this aspect.
This came as the Minister inaugurated a new evening secondary educational centre for female students in the Southern Governorate. The Minister toured the classrooms and scrutinised the workflow in the new centre .
The centre has been opened as part of the Ministry's policy in bringing education services closer to the public. The centre serves the areas of Riffa, Isa Town, Hamad Town and neighboring areas plus two other centres to cover the rest of governorates.
Dr. Majid bin Ali Al-Nuaimi stressed that the right to adult education emanates from the provisions of the Constitution which made education the right of all and as per Law 27/2005 regarding education, which stipulates in clause 9 that: (illiteracy and adult education are a national responsibly aimed to raise the cultural, social and professional levels of citizens, the Ministry assumes implementation of the necessary plans to eradicate illiteracy).
The Minister stressed the Ministry's keenness on developing illiteracy, adult and continuous education programmes through the introduction of computer illiteracy programmes for male/female students in the Ministry-affiliated centres in addition to many professional and cultural programmes and workshops for the public.
