Dubai - Arabstoday

A woman courted trouble after failing to furnish a copy of her marriage certificate after giving birth although she maintains that she got pregnant during the time she stayed with her husband, who has left the country to return on a new visa. The woman, identified as M.A., came to the UAE two years ago to work as a child minder for a family in Abu Dhabi, but absconded in May last year when her employer withheld her salary for three months. M.A. told Public Prosecution that she approached the Philippines Embassy in Abu Dhabi, who helped cancel the residency visa issued by her employer. M.A told embassy officials that she wanted to stay on in the UAE and look for another job. M.A. said she had been staying in an apartment in Dubai with her husband, P.V., who apparently left the UAE to renew his visa after completing three years in the country. When P.V. left the UAE, M.A., who was already pregnant, moved in with a friend of hers in Rashidiya. Article continues below On May 2, M.A. went into labour, and her friend called for an ambulance, which took her to Al Wasl Hospital where she gave birth to a boy. While M.A. remains in detention with her yet unnamed baby, the case was adjourned until June 17 to give her time to get a copy of her marriage contract from the Philippines.
