Single women in Iran are fighting for freedom in order to pursue their dreams, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. Traditionally, Iranian women either live with their parents or husband yet some are desperate to lead an independent life to pursue studies or other hopeful dreams. However, women are generally declined the chance to rent accommodation by real estate agents or landlords in order to continue the country’s deeply-rooted tradition. The exact number of women living independently is unknown, but it is believed that most female students and divorced women are applying to rent accommodations. Clerics and politicians are concerned by the increase in the number of women living independently, arguing that it is ruining the culture of the country. Accordingly, they launched a campaign to promote quick and cheap marriages. Experts say though that the plan has backfired by cheapening an institution deeply anchored in Iran’s ancient culture. It is assumed that the hustle and bustle of city life, combined with the opportunity of freedom and ambition, is the reason for the drastic overturn of single women hopeful of living solo and to pursue their studies for a brighter career.
