Lynn - UPI

A Massachusetts man allegedly slit the throats of his mother and grandmother before making a dash into Canada where he was apprehended, authorities said. Joseph Wright, 23, allegedly told Canadian police who arrested him Tuesday night in New Brunswick, he had killed Donna Breau, 54, and her mother, Melba Trahant, 83, at their home in Lynn and dumped their bodies at a school in Saugus before driving his grandmother's car 350 miles north to Maine's U.S.-Canadian border. At the border, customs officials directed him to stop, but court records show he kept driving. Eventually, he abandoned the car and fled into the woods on foot until police caught up with him at Richmond Corner, The Boston Globe reported. It wasn't clear why Wright attacked his mother and grandmother, but friends and neighbors said he had substance abuse and anger issues, the newspaper said. "It's unbelievable," Peter Bourgeois, who lived above the two victims, told the Globe. "I knew he had problems, anger issues. But I never thought he would do something like this." Wright grew up with his father in Lowell. His father declined to comment on his son's arrest. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police turned Wright over to U.S. officials Wednesday. At a court hearing in Maine, he waived extradition to Massachusetts and was being brought back by state troopers, the Globe said. Wright was expected to be arraigned Thursday in Lynn District Court on two counts of first-degree murder.
