Mobile industry remains stagnant without Apple

New data released on Wednesday showed that excluding Apple, the mobile computing industry has remained flat for the past five years.According to data compiled by Morgan Keegan via technology news site AllThingsD, after the first iPhone was introduced in June 2007, the mobile industry revenue in the fourth quarter of 2007 was around 37.93 billion U.S. dollars. The revenue for the industry almost doubled in the same period last year, reaching 71. 4 billion dollars.However, excluding Apple, the industry revenue in the fourth quarter of 2011 was only 37.97 billion dollars, almost the same as what it was five years ago.Apple reported 33.5 billion dollars in mobile device revenue for its fourth quarter of 2011, which means it generated around 47 percent of the entire industry revenue. In other words, the non- Apple revenue in the mobile industry has almost been flat in the past five years.Morgan Keegan analyst Tavis McCourt told AllThingsD that Apple is dominating the industry's poll of profits. "With about 11 percent of industry shipment volumes of smartphones and tablets, Apple generates about 47 percent of the industry's revenues, and over 80 percent of its operating profits," he said.
