Canadian law increases police powers to target internet porn

The bill, unveiled Tuesday, will grant police and intelligence agencies new powers to monitor Canadian's electronic communications and obtain telecommunications subscriber data without a warrant. Such a law is needed to target child pornographers, Xinhua news agency quoted officials as saying. "I believe that unless this legislation is adopted, this will in fact allow child pornographers and organised crime to flourish," Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told reporters. "The focus here is the protection of children." The law will give monitoring powers to the police and the internal security agency Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) which does not investigate crimes other than terrorism, espionage and sedition.
