Kuwait condones linking the world communications networks in such a way to prevent the occurrence of global natural disasters or assuage their impact on the populace and on property, said a Kuwaiti minister at a conference here today. Addressing a regular session of the council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Kuwait's minister of communications Salem al-Uthaina also came out in favor of closing the digital technology gap between developing countries and the highly developed ones. He praised the work being carried out by the ITU and pledged Kuwait's support in the union's endeavors. He reviewed in his speech to the council Kuwait's efforts in updating its telecommunications infrastructure and incorporating the tools of Information Technology in ten fundamental projects it is currently undertaking. He noted that Kuwait began the use of fiber optics in 2006 and that the use of Internet in education is well on its way in the country. He indicated that there are seven internet providers in Kuwait and three telecoms that provide mobile phone service.
