About 25,000 metric tons of chemical weapons, or 62 percent of Russia’s stockpile, have been destroyed by April 29, the day when the International Chemical Weapons Convention came into force.
In 15 years Russia destroyed about two thirds of its world-largest stockpile of 40,000 metric tons.
The goal is to destroy 100 percent of chemical weapons in Russia by 2015, according to RIA Novosti news agency. The 188 states parties to the Convention initially planned to destroy all chemical weapons in the world by 2012.
