A Russian inter-departmental delegation led by Boris Morgunov, an aide to the Minister of Economic Development has been studying the U.S. experience in preventing contamination of the environment and elimination of the damage inflicted on the environment in the past, with a particular accent on the applications suitable for the Arctic areas. The delegation’s week-long trip was held under the auspices of an appropriate workgroup of the Russia-U.S. Presidential Commission. An official at the Russian Trade Mission in Washington told Itar-Tass delegation members and leading experts of the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, and the Environmental Protection Agency discussed various aspects of averting the chemical contamination of territories and legislative issues of nature conservation and elimination of the past ecological damage. Several U.S. corporations specializing in the field of environmental technologies showed their technological inventions for cleaning the contaminated territories. The itinerary of the visit also included familiarization with the experience gained by EPA’s territorial branches, including the ones in New York and Edison, NJ, visits to a number of laboratories and research centers, and a familiarization trip to a site where past ecological damage is being eliminated. In the course of the visit, an agreement on cooperation between the Ecological Development Technologies technological platform and the U.S. National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology was signed.
