Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, on Wednesday rolled out its fifth- generation (5G) green memory chips to consume less energy and enhance performance simultaneously. Samsung unveiled the green memory solutions at the Memory Solutions Forum hosted by the company in central Seoul. The South Korean tech behemoth said the advanced memory solutions were optimized for next generation data centers that use cloud computing based on a big data platform. The new chips will secure more physical space, while saving more power, Samsung said. The Green DDR4 raised its server data transfer speed to 2,133 megabits per second (Mb/s) from the DDR3's performance limit of 1,866 Mb/s, while consuming 24 percent less energy. The company said that it planned to mass produce DDR4 with a data transfer speed of 3,200 Mb/s in the future, expanding the high-speed DDR4 DRAM market. The Green PCIe solid state drive (SSD) can offer a data transfer speed of four gigabytes per second (GB/s), six times faster than the SATA SSD's 600MB/s and reducing the delay in data transfer by 67 percent. It can enhance energy efficiency around 2. 6 times. "With the introduction of these innovative memory solutions that maximize IT investment efficiency, we have set the stage for sharply strengthening the value of advanced memory," said Jun Young-hyun, executive vice president of Samsung's memory sales and marketing.
