Samsung Electronics Co. is set to add a wireless charging feature to the Galaxy S4, its latest flagship device waiting to be launched later this month, a company official said. The Galaxy S4 is set to use Qi wireless technology, a standard approved by the Wireless Power Consortium for inductive electrical power transfer over distances up to 4 centimeters. Samsung Electronics is a member of the consortium on wireless charging technology, which includes over 100 manufacturers such as South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. and China's Huawei Technologies Co. The move comes as global manufacturers are adding the charging feature to their mobile devices. LG Electronics has applied the feature on its latest device, the Optimus G Pro. Samsung Electronics is likely to provide the charging technology via smartphone back cover, the official said, but added that the accessory may not become available in all markets. The accessory will be subject to a customary certification process by regulatory bodies in different markets. The Galaxy S4 is expected to hit European shelves next week. The local release is scheduled for April 25.
