Some 1,045 Facebook pages were closed during 2016 over inciting violence and murder of policemen and army personnel, the head of the anti-computer and internet crimes directorate said.
In an interview with MENA on Saturday, Brigadier General Ali Abaza said the directorate also managed during 2016 to seize 2,372 libel cases, 193 fraud cases and 77 hacking cases.
Abaza noted that the Interior Ministry does not eavesdrop on people, it just seeks to bust terrorists, expounding that it is illogical to keep an eye on 45 million Facebook users in Egypt.
As for securing secondary school (Thanawiya Ama) exams, he said the department took all needed measures to secure the exams and prevent electronic cheat.
Abaza added that the directorate in collaboration with the Interior Ministry bodies managed to arrest the person behind exam leakage last year and he stood a trial.
