Washington - UPI

Canadian-American abstract expressionist Agnes Martin was celebrated Saturday with a Google doodle, recreating her iconic, minimalist work. The artist was born 102 years ago Saturday in Macklin, Canada, though ended up getting her degrees at Columbia University and lived in New York and ultimately died in 2004 while living in New Mexico. Martin was known for painting in grid patterns using soft, ethereal color palettes, the Washington Post reported. Her work hangs at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney, the Hirshorn and the National Gallery of Art, among others. "Agnes Martin's work was minimally elegant and gives definition to those two words," said Earl A. Powell when he was director of the National Gallery of Art in 2004. "Her work was subdued, quiet, serene and contemplative. She made a huge contribution to postwar art."
